President's Musings

  • The reins change hands
Well - after what seems like only a couple of months, but was in fact a whole year, I handed over the Chain (ribbon?) of Office to Jean this morning.I did say in my speech on President's Night tha ...
  • Happy Birthday, Luton Someries
1993. Lots of bad things happened. The Waco siege ended in an inferno, Bishopsgate was bombed, and Jamie Bulger’s murderers were charged.  However amid all this doom and despair, the rece ...
  • Youth: Wasted on the young?
So. Another month gone by - and, from my point of view, another year. I've now had a whole year to get used to being 40, and the realisation that I'm now a middle-aged Dad - and slowly, inevit ...
  • President's April Musings
I know that we are well through the year now - in fact only two months remain. I could provide a plethora of reasons for the paucity of communications, but instead I'm going to put a stake in the ...

Welcome to Luton Someries Rotary Club

someries.jpgThe Rotary Club of Luton Someries was formed in 1993 and takes its name from Someries Castle in Luton.

This website is for members of the public and other Rotarians to see what we do - and is also a working site for the club's members, so some areas are restricted. Our Committee News and News sections contain information on club activities.

Please come and join us for breakfast on a Friday morning. If possible, could you inform us before the event; then we can ensure there's enough eggs and bacon for you! Our Contact Us page has the relevant phone numbers or email addresses.

President's Night

craigcharlotte.jpgThe Riverside Suite was again the venue for this year's now-legendary Luton Someries President's Night - ever popular with club members, friends, families and other Rotarians.

As the guest-of-honour (or should that be 'target') for this year's shindig, I had very little idea of the menu chosen - let alone what a spectacular treat was in store for everyone!

The food was ok - the company fantastic - and the speeches (hopefully) not too long. Once the food was cleared away - the fun began...

Reading Rota

scalesofknowledgeWhen Patricia (Head of Wauluds School) was last in, she thanked us again for continuing to support the Literacy Project in the school. Even though it's just an hour - less for the kids - it makes a real difference to the kids' confidence and reading to be given attention from someone other than teachers and parents.

Confidence in reading opens so many doors to learning and education for the children that it is the most important skill someone can learn.  That's why we set up the project - and that's why we're going to present the dictionaries to the kids this year.

The staff at Wauluds produced a leaflet about the best way you can help kids with their reading - no matter at what level they read.

Please download the Reading Together leaflet. Read it before your next Literacy Rota slot - if you need help with the long words, I can help.

Snippets

printingJill and Patricia have resurrected the Snippets, which they will be publishing once a month. In a ideal world, people would be producing regular articles for the website and snippets - and the editorial team will be able to select those best suited for the snippets each month.

However - we're realists, and we struggle each month to get people to provide us with a two paragraph summary of the council reports. So - if you do have anything for the snippets - be it amusing, enlightening, informative or even just interesting... please pass it to Jill, Patricia or myself.

The Archive of Snippets can be accessed on the website under the Documents menu.

Luton North Rotary 10K

bloodpressureLuton North are again organsing their 10K run, which this year is on the 14th September.  If you know any runners, or running-clubs, please see the letter and poster below, and forward it on to them.  I've notified the Flitwick Flyers who have added it to their club calendar, so hopefully that will provide some entrants.

The club have also set up a website at www.luton-north-stroke10k.co.uk for online subscriptions.

Sand, Sea and Sun?

There are lots of good reasons to go to the District Conference - fortunately the need for lazing in the sun isn't a key one. It's just as well - we wimped out of walking the 150 yards to the dinner on Saturday night having watched a woman get blown over. I had spent so long on my hair, I didn't want to get it ruined in the rain...

It had been a few days of WILD weather. Those that drove down on Friday morning got caught in the driving (pun intended) rain, which Lynn was sure was the worst she had ever seen. I did make sure that she new about windscreen wipers, and had worked out how to turn them on - so it must indeed have been bad! Those that drove down in the afternoon were still snarled up in the traffic chaos that the weather (or Lynn's driving) left in it's wake. Sarah & I finally arrived at 5.30 - having left before 1.00.
