Since the last Council Meeting the International Committee travelled in a party of 9 to Iserlohn to meet with our German friends and we were joined by our friends from Holland. A wonderful weekend was had by all. Flying from Luton on Friday 7th in the evening we were met by Gerd and Ralf from the German club who took us to our hotel set in beautiful parkland where we met our friends from Holland and enjoyed a light late supper. In the morning after an excellent breakfast we went by luxury coach to the Folkwang Museum in Essen described by Paul Sachs as “the most beautiful museum in the world”. It was too. Gathered for just two months only were some of the most coveted and hidden works by the impressionist/expressionist painters deemed as the degenerates. These had been scattered worldwide and tracked down by the Folkwang to bring together a stunning and rare exhibition of just a few weeks duration. |

My First Rotary Conference |
Due to work commitments, I was unable to attend the opening sessions. Bronwen and I arrived at the Travelodge around 5 pm giving plenty of time to settle in and meet the rest of the party in the bar prior to a meal out - Janet and Jill went to the ‘posh’ dinner in the company of the lovely Frank Hamel from Luton North whom they had taken down. Frank is now 92 with a mind like a razor and great company. Jean and Chris had chosen the Bear for our evening meal and we drove ourselves there which was a BIG mistake as we couldn’t find anywhere to park when we got back to the hotel. A very pleasant venue to start the weekend. |

"Somarian" hits the billboards |
|
The older (by which I mean those who have been in the club longer) Someries Rotarians will remember Kathy Leather, who is now working for the Worcester Warriors Rugby Team in Worcester.
Kathy was a founder member - and was one of the 'faces of Rotary' chosen by the RIBI publicity team to be part of the recent Rotary PR campaign. Kathy took this picture and said that there were about 45 of these in and around Birmingham.

We all go back to school! Well we have been kept behind in detention and Sir is teaching us how to use the Someries website.....
The following students have stayed behind:
Jenny, Henry, Bob, Dave W, Sarah, Julia, Dave E
and me. So far we have 'logged in', changed our profiles, learned how
to add news and looked at the calendar. How long we remember is another
matter - but so far so good!
Just like school there has been lots of
giggling and naughtiness! So far no major incidents to report but who
knows where this will lead.

Started on Saturday under blue skies and sun, by noon on Sunday the scene was mostly set. Nick Vigor had been (again) generous enough to open his house for the now legendary Luton Someries Jazz in the Garden.
It had been awaited for a long time, postponed after Malcom was suddenly taken from us in July. His friends and family turned out in force to remember Malcolm as he'd have wished - an afternoon filled with smiling faces, music and friendship.
In order to provide a mellow ambience to the afternoon, Gentle Jazz had been booked to serenade us while we drank, laughed and listened. The band was mainly made up of Rotarians from around Hemel Hempstead, and they played their hearts out for no fee other than a few beers: a donation from the Jazz in the Garden will go via them to the Shed in the Park children's theatre project.

Friday, 18 September was the night I first ventured into a Rotary Quiz Night at the Leaside Hotel. I gather these are a regular occurrence.
I hadn’t been there much before at all and wouldn’t have found my way to the appropriate room if it wasn’t for the din of those already gathered. The room was set out with tables for 6 and I joined, by prior arrangement, Bronwen and Janet. It was nice to have someone to meet there. They were sitting with our President David Worker and his wife and Sandra and her husband so someone suggested we call ourselves ‘All the President’s women, plus one’. |
