Welcome to Luton Someries Rotary Club

someries.jpgThe Rotary Club of Luton Someries was formed in 1993 and takes its name from Someries Castle in Luton.

This website is for members of the public and other Rotarians to see what we do - and is also a working site for the club's members, so some areas are restricted. Our Committee News and News sections contain information on club activities.

Please come and join us for breakfast on a Friday morning. If possible, could you inform us before the event; then we can ensure there's enough food and a place for you to sit! Our Contact Us page has the relevant phone numbers or email addresses.

Started on Saturday under blue skies and sun, by noon on Sunday the scene was mostly set. Nick Vigor had been (again) generous enough to open his house for the now legendary Luton Someries Jazz in the Garden.

It had been awaited for a long time, postponed after Malcom was suddenly taken from us in July. His friends and family turned out in force to remember Malcolm as he'd have wished - an afternoon filled with smiling faces, music and friendship.

In order to provide a mellow ambience to the afternoon, Gentle Jazz had been booked to serenade us while we drank, laughed and listened. The band was mainly made up of Rotarians from around Hemel Hempstead, and they played their hearts out for no fee other than a few beers: a donation from the Jazz in the Garden will go via them to the Shed in the Park children's theatre project.

Once again - our catering team did us proud; the food spread before the 160-strong revellers was a site for hungry eyes. A pig-roast, barbecue, salmon and more apple pie than you could shake a spoon at, kept us all going back for more. Carole once again ruled in the kitchen, keeping a watchful eye over Rotarians and waitresses to ensure that the behind-the-scenes Rotarians and friends all kept the day moving with slickness and no fuss.

The star of the day was the weather. Someone made the comment that Malcolm must have had a word in a Divine Ear to book the weather: somebody else pointed out that it is only a local call for him now. While thanking the assembled throng, Nick announced the Malcolm Foxley award, which will be presented each year to someone that has made the biggest beneficial impact through fun and fellowship - inside or outside Rotary.

The raffle was popular - with a nice selection of prizes (winning tea-for-two at Luton Hoo has made my choice of Sarah's birthday present easier - and cheaper) and a large contribution to the fund-raising for the day. In line with President David's wishes, the funds raised (to be announced) will go to the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

All in all, one of the best - if not the best - Jazz in the Garden that we've ever had. A huge, heartfelt "Thank you!" to all the people who helped behind the scenes - and to those who came and made it the success that it assuredly was.
