Welcome to Luton Someries Rotary Club

someries.jpgThe Rotary Club of Luton Someries was formed in 1993 and takes its name from Someries Castle in Luton.

This website is for members of the public and other Rotarians to see what we do - and is also a working site for the club's members, so some areas are restricted. Our Committee News and News sections contain information on club activities.

Please come and join us for breakfast on a Friday morning. If possible, could you inform us before the event; then we can ensure there's enough food and a place for you to sit! Our Contact Us page has the relevant phone numbers or email addresses.

Barton Hills Farm Visit

The Farmyard was bathed in glorious sunshine, and the tubs of geraniums displayed in front of the house looked magnificent as we gathered for our tour of Barton Hill Farm.

We were met by the Shaw family, Brian and Gerry his wife and their daughter Whizz (Isabel) and provided with drinks and doughnuts before the tour began. Only seven members of the club were present but the numbers were swelled by the families and friends who came along.

Five Clubs Golf Champs!

Monday June 25th and Someries face up to a day of storms and driving rain as all the forecasts predict, to play in the annual Luton Five Clubs Golf Day at the South Beds Golf Club.

With Bob Wiles, Paul Walker, Nick Vigor and Henry (the lone ranger) Richardson in the team it was as early as 9.00am that one member started to panic but...

President's Night

The Riverside Suite was again the venue for this year's now-legendary Luton Someries President's Night - ever popular with club members, friends, families and other Rotarians.

As the guest-of-honour (or should that be 'target') for this year's shindig, I had very little idea of the menu chosen - let alone what a spectacular treat was in store for everyone!

The food was ok - the company fantastic - and the speeches (hopefully) not too long. Once the food was cleared away - the fun began...

Reading Rota

scalesofknowledgeWhen Patricia (Head of Wauluds School) was last in, she thanked us again for continuing to support the Literacy Project in the school. Even though it's just an hour - less for the kids - it makes a real difference to the kids' confidence and reading to be given attention from someone other than teachers and parents.

Confidence in reading opens so many doors to learning and education for the children that it is the most important skill someone can learn.  That's why we set up the project - and that's why we're going to present the dictionaries to the kids this year.

The staff at Wauluds produced a leaflet about the best way you can help kids with their reading - no matter at what level they read.

Please download the Reading Together leaflet. Read it before your next Literacy Rota slot - if you need help with the long words, I can help.

Luton North Rotary 10K

bloodpressureLuton North are again organsing their 10K run, which this year is on the 14th September.  If you know any runners, or running-clubs, please see the letter and poster below, and forward it on to them.  I've notified the Flitwick Flyers who have added it to their club calendar, so hopefully that will provide some entrants.

The club have also set up a website at www.luton-north-stroke10k.co.uk for online subscriptions.

Sand, Sea and Sun?

There are lots of good reasons to go to the District Conference - fortunately the need for lazing in the sun isn't a key one. It's just as well - we wimped out of walking the 150 yards to the dinner on Saturday night having watched a woman get blown over. I had spent so long on my hair, I didn't want to get it ruined in the rain...

It had been a few days of WILD weather. Those that drove down on Friday morning got caught in the driving (pun intended) rain, which Lynn was sure was the worst she had ever seen. I did make sure that she new about windscreen wipers, and had worked out how to turn them on - so it must indeed have been bad! Those that drove down in the afternoon were still snarled up in the traffic chaos that the weather (or Lynn's driving) left in it's wake. Sarah & I finally arrived at 5.30 - having left before 1.00.
